Hydrocortisone is an anti-inflammatory agent that shrinks swollen and irritated tissue through constriction of blood vessels. As with any steroid, long-term use of topical hydrocortisone 1% may result in unwanted side effects such as:

— Thinning, bruising and tearing of the skin
— Stretch marks
— Enlarged blood vessels
— Susceptibility to skin infections
